Who It's For

Managers setting up or redesigning a team

Overview

Not every group called a team is one, and the difference has real costs for public services. This programme sets out what makes a real team, drawing on Katzenbach and Smith, Richard Hackman, Michael West and Google's Project Aristotle. It explores how teams develop, from Tuckman to Gersick's punctuated equilibrium and Wheelan's integrated model, and what the evidence says makes teams effective, including Hackman's conditions and the Big Five of teamwork. It closes on purpose, goals and team charters, and on roles, composition and size, from Belbin to the evidence on diversity and faultlines.

Aims

This programme aims to help leaders design teams well from the start: deciding whether a real team is needed, setting a compelling direction, getting composition and size right, and creating the conditions for effectiveness before reaching for coaching or team building.

In summary, you will be able to:

  1. Distinguish real teams from working groups and pseudo teams and assess your own team against the evidence on what makes teams effective.
  2. Plan leadership actions for each stage of a team's development, from launch and early days to the midpoint and close.
  3. Design a team's purpose, goals, charter and composition, drawing on the GRPI model and the evidence on roles, size and diversity.

What you'll develop

Through this Focus course, you will build the ability to:

  1. Distinguish a working group, a pseudo team and a real team using Katzenbach and Smith's team performance curve.
  2. Assess your own team against Hackman's four features of a real team and West's three tests.
  3. Describe Tuckman's stages and Wheelan's integrated model, and identify where your team currently sits.
  4. Explain Hackman's three essentials and three enablers, and why design matters more than coaching.
  5. Explain Hackman's compelling direction and why it should specify ends rather than means.
  6. Describe Belbin's nine team roles and explain why they suit conversation rather than selection.
