Overview and Outcomes.
Who It's For
Leaders who already coach and want a wider repertoire
Overview
Once the basics are in place, the question becomes which approach suits the person and the moment. Schools of thought explores the main traditions that shape coaching practice today: cognitive behavioural coaching after Beck, Ellis, Neenan and Palmer; the practical toolkit of questions, listening and structure drawn from Passmore and Clutterbuck; and the Tavistock tradition of Bion and Menzies Lyth, which places every conversation inside a system. It widens to team and systemic coaching with Hawkins, Hackman and Wageman, takes a focused look at Jonathan Passmore's integrative model and motivational interviewing, and ends with Kram's and Clutterbuck's work on mentoring.
Aims
This programme aims to widen the repertoire of leaders who already coach, so they can choose deliberately between cognitive behavioural, psychodynamic, systemic and integrative approaches, work well with individuals, teams and mentees, and recognise whether an issue sits in the person's thinking, in the relationship or in the wider system.
In summary, you will be able to:
- Compare cognitive behavioural, systems-psychodynamic, systemic and integrative approaches to coaching and choose the one that best fits the person and situation.
- Use practical coaching skills, including powerful questions, the ABCDE model and motivational interviewing, to help someone who feels stuck reach a clear commitment.
- Design coaching or mentoring for teams and groups, drawing on Hawkins, Hackman and Wageman, and Kram to set conditions, roles and ground rules.
What you'll develop
Through this Focus course, you will build the ability to:
- Apply Ellis's ABCDE model to bring an unhelpful belief into view and dispute it collaboratively.
- Plan a coaching session by clarifying whether it is about development or performance and choosing a suitable setting.
- Describe Bion's three basic assumptions and recognise them in groups and in the coaching relationship.
- Distinguish individual, team, group and systemic coaching and choose where the most useful leverage lies.
- Describe the six streams of Passmore's integrative model and work across the four levels of behaviour, thinking, the unconscious and the system.
- Distinguish Kram's career and psychosocial functions and describe the four phases of a mentoring relationship.
