About this course

Overview and Outcomes.

Who It's For

Managers and leaders in public service starting to coach

Overview

Good coaching starts with knowing which conversation you are in. Where coaching begins sets out the ground beneath every helpful conversation at work: how coaching differs from training, mentoring and counselling, using Passmore's continuum of helping, and what the evidence says about whether it works. It then turns to the relationship itself, through Bordin's working alliance, contracting and presence, before following the line from Gallwey's Inner Game to Whitmore's GROW and its successors. It closes with the adult learning theory of Kolb, Knowles and Argyris that explains why coaching works, and the person-centred and solution-focused traditions of Rogers and de Shazer.

Aims

This programme aims to give managers and leaders in public service a confident, evidence-informed basis for coaching conversations: recognising when coaching is the right response, building the trust and contracting that make it work, and holding a model such as GROW lightly enough that it serves the person rather than the process.

In summary, you will be able to:

  1. Distinguish coaching from training, mentoring and counselling, and explain what the research evidence and adult learning theory say about why coaching works.
  2. Apply GROW or a successor model, supported by open questions, presence and solution-focused tools, to hold a purposeful coaching conversation.
  3. Plan the contracting, confidentiality and trust a coaching relationship needs, and judge when a difficult issue should be named directly or referred elsewhere.

What you'll develop

Through this Focus course, you will build the ability to:

  1. Distinguish training, coaching, mentoring and counselling, and identify which conversation you are in.
  2. Explain Passmore's definition of coaching and use his continuum of helping to recognise when a conversation needs other support.
  3. Explain the three elements of the working alliance and what the research says about its link to coaching outcomes.
  4. Explain Gallwey's formula of performance as potential minus interference, and his Self 1 and Self 2.
  5. Explain how a coaching conversation takes a coachee once around Kolb's experiential learning cycle.
  6. Describe Rogers's three core conditions of empathy, congruence and unconditional positive regard, and how they shape coaching presence.
