Who It's For

Leaders in councils, housing associations and charities driving innovation

Overview

Innovation looks different once profit stops driving it. Innovation that serves is a half day exploration of innovation in councils, housing associations and charities. It begins with Chesbrough's open innovation and Nesta's barriers and enabling mechanisms, then turns to the culture leaders create, through The Innovator's DNA and Edmondson's psychological safety. It shows how to audit and measure innovation honestly with the Cranfield Innovation Health Check and a public service scorecard, and brings an entrepreneurial mindset inside the organisation through Sarasvathy's effectuation and the Lean Startup. A capstone reads the Preston Model, IKEA and Finland's Housing First strategy together.

Aims

This programme aims to develop leaders who can make innovation work in public service conditions, recognising the barriers that stop good ideas surviving, building a culture and measures that sustain experimentation, and acting as intrapreneurs who test ideas carefully before committing public resources.

In summary, you will be able to:

  1. Explain why public sector innovation differs from market innovation and identify the barriers in Nesta's taxonomy that affect your organisation.
  2. Design a public service innovation scorecard and portfolio, informed by an honest health check of your organisation's culture and maturity.
  3. Lead a small, evidence based innovation within your organisation, drawing on effectuation, psychological safety and lessons from Preston, IKEA and Finland.

What you'll develop

Across this Explore, you will develop the ability to:

  1. Explain Chesbrough's distinction between closed and open innovation and describe how ideas and value can flow both ways across an organisation's boundary.
  2. Identify why public sector innovation differs from market innovation and name the barriers in Nesta's taxonomy that stop good ideas surviving.
  3. Describe the five discovery skills of associating, questioning, observing, experimenting and networking, and how a leader can model each one.
  4. Use the Cranfield Innovation Health Check's five dimensions as an honest self assessment to identify which dimension is holding your organisation back.
  5. Explain Schumpeter's creative destruction and five new combinations, and describe the four parts of an entrepreneurial mindset.
  6. Identify which programme frameworks, such as diffusion, the crazy quilt and jobs to be done, explain each of the Preston, IKEA and Finland cases.
