Who It's For

Leaders helping teams generate and develop new ideas

Overview

The creative mind at work is a half day exploration of how ideas are generated, shaped and spread. It opens by separating creativity from innovation and challenging common myths, then builds a practical toolkit of divergent and convergent techniques, from de Bono's Six Thinking Hats to the New, Useful, Feasible test. Robert Dilts's strategies of genius, including Disney's Dreamer, Realist and Critic, show how great minds separate modes of thinking. The programme then turns outwards, to design thinking models and cases such as the Government Digital Service, and to Rogers's diffusion, Moore's chasm and Christensen's disruptive innovation.

Aims

The aim is to develop leaders who can move their teams from blank page to a well designed idea with a realistic path to adoption, combining disciplined creative technique with human centred design and a clear reading of how innovations spread or stall.

In summary, you will be able to:

  1. Distinguish creativity from innovation and explain the theories, from Amabile to Rogers, that describe where ideas come from and how they spread.
  2. Apply creative thinking techniques, Disney's Dreamer, Realist and Critic method and design thinking practices to a real service problem with your team.
  3. Assess an emerging innovation in your area using diffusion, jobs to be done and disruption, and plan how to carry it across the chasm.

What you'll develop

Across this Explore, you will develop the ability to:

  1. Distinguish creativity, innovation and entrepreneurship, and diagnose whether a stalled idea in your organisation reflects a creativity gap or an innovation gap.
  2. Explain the core theories of where creativity comes from, including divergent and convergent thinking, Amabile's three components, Csikszentmihalyi's systems model and flow, and Torrance's four measures.
  3. Distinguish divergent from convergent thinking, and creative from critical thinking, and explain why judgement should be held back until the right moment.
  4. Explain Dilts's argument that genius is a describable, repeatable strategy rather than an innate gift.
  5. Explain what makes design thinking human centred, empathy driven and non-linear, and compare the Double Diamond, d.school, IDEO and IBM models.
  6. Explain Rogers's S curve and five adopter categories, and identify the chasm Moore describes between early adopters and the early majority.
