Who It's For
Leaders responsible for staff wellbeing, recovery and accountability after emergencies
Overview
This half day looks honestly at the aftermath, beginning with people: Edmondson's psychological safety, Heifetz's holding environment, Maslach and Leiter on burnout and Shay and Litz on moral injury. It then reads the inquiries with care: the Covid-19 Inquiry on preparedness and on decisions across four nations, the Grenfell Tower Inquiry, in memory of the 72 people who died, and the Manchester Arena Inquiry, remembering the 22 people who did not come home. Recovery follows: the handover from response, humanitarian assistance with dignity, communities as responders and the long shadow of Aberfan. Accountability closes the half day: what inquiries under the Inquiries Act 2005 can and cannot do, the Hillsborough families' campaign, the Welsh NHS duty of candour, and a capstone reading Salisbury, Storm Arwen and the CrowdStrike outage.
Aims
This programme aims to equip leaders to support staff after trauma, test their organisation honestly against what public inquiries have found, lead recovery that serves communities over years rather than weeks, and respond to scrutiny with candour rather than defensiveness.
In summary, you will be able to:
- Plan proportionate support for staff after a traumatic event, recognising strain, burnout and moral injury as information about the wider system.
- Assess your organisation's readiness against the findings of the Covid-19, Grenfell Tower and Manchester Arena inquiries, and identify where practice must change.
- Lead recovery and accountability with dignity, working with affected communities and meeting scrutiny through the duty of candour and visible learning.
What you'll develop
Across this Explore, you will develop the ability to:
- Plan proportionate support after a traumatic event, and build rest, rotation and handover into a response from its first days.
- Assess why the lessons of Exercise Cygnus were not acted on, and what turns an exercise into real change.
- Assess how warnings, complaints and certificates are handled in your organisation, and where they may be dismissed or trusted without evidence.
- Distinguish a plan that one service knows from a genuinely joint plan, and judge which of your own plans rely on partners.
- Apply the principles of dignified humanitarian assistance and community partnership to people affected by an emergency.
- Use the habits of saying sorry early, explaining honestly and learning visibly to strengthen candour and learning in your organisation.
