Overview and Outcomes.
Who It's For
Leaders connecting personal wellbeing with organisational resilience
Overview
Resilience rests on a body that can recover, a mind that can be kind to itself and an organisation designed to absorb shocks. This programme opens with the Wigan Deal, the LEGO Group turnaround and Buurtzorg's self-managing teams, then turns to the physiology of resilience through Matthew Walker on sleep, allostatic load and polyvagal theory. It explores self-compassion and the inner critic with Kristin Neff, and what motivates people under pressure through Self-Determination Theory and PERMA. It closes at organisational level, with high-reliability principles, ISO 22316 and Taleb's antifragility.
Aims
The aim is to help leaders connect personal and organisational resilience: looking after the physiology and inner voice that sustain them, designing work that meets people's needs for autonomy, competence and relatedness, and building organisational capabilities that treat failure as information and gain from disruption rather than merely surviving it.
In summary, you will be able to:
- Explain how sleep, stress physiology, self-compassion and basic psychological needs affect performance and wellbeing under sustained pressure.
- Apply the notice, regulate, then decide sequence, the self-compassion break and Self-Determination Theory to support yourself and others through demanding periods.
- Assess your organisation's resilience against high-reliability principles, ISO 22316 and antifragility, and identify practical starting points for strengthening it.
What you'll develop
Through this Focus course, you will build the ability to:
- Explain how established resilience and adaptability frameworks account for the decisions taken by Wigan Council, LEGO and Buurtzorg.
- Explain why sleep underpins resilience and distinguish the acute stress response from allostatic load.
- Describe Neff's three components of self-compassion and distinguish self-compassion from self-pity, excuse making and lowered standards.
- Explain Self-Determination Theory's three basic needs and identify what it looks like when each goes unmet.
- Describe Weick and Sutcliffe's five high-reliability principles and the everyday habits each one works against.
- Distinguish fragile, robust, resilient and antifragile responses to shock and identify where fragility hides in your organisation.
