About this course

Overview and Outcomes.

Who It's For

Team leaders and managers supporting people through pressure and change

Overview

When the resilience needed is not only your own, the conditions a leader creates matter most. This programme explores psychological safety through Amy Edmondson, Heifetz's holding environment and how unspoken anxiety leaks into team behaviour, with Google's Project Aristotle as a case. It treats adaptability as a learnable skill, contrasting the organisational lurch with Hamel and Valikangas's continuous renewal, and asks how resilience can be sustained without shifting structural problems onto individuals. It ends practically, with six areas of resilience to score honestly, a personal resilience plan and a team resilience charter written in a calm period.

Aims

This programme aims to help leaders build resilience in the people and teams around them, creating psychological safety and recovery, developing adaptability before it is needed, and turning good intentions into a written, tested plan, so that resilience rests on shared conditions rather than on individual stamina alone.

In summary, you will be able to:

  1. Explain how psychological safety, the holding environment and recovery shape a team's capacity to come through adversity and sustained pressure.
  2. Assess adaptability and resilience at personal and team level, using the six areas of resilience and the observable behaviours of adaptability.
  3. Build a personal resilience plan and a team resilience charter that address your largest gaps without placing structural problems on individual stamina.

What you'll develop

Through this Focus course, you will build the ability to:

  1. Explain Edmondson's definition of psychological safety and describe how a leader's response to the first piece of bad news builds or destroys it.
  2. Use Heifetz's holding environment to judge when to turn the heat up or down during adaptive change.
  3. Distinguish adaptability from resilience and explain why neither can substitute for the other.
  4. Identify the four observable behaviours of the adaptability quotient and plan one practical step for each in your own work.
  5. Explain why individual resilience work is incomplete on its own and distinguish Magness's real toughness from the appearance of strength.
  6. Assess your own resilience across the six areas and identify your largest gap, testing your score with someone who will be honest with you.
