Who It's For
Leaders and HR professionals responding to modern workplace pressures
Overview
Some of today's pressures sit outside the classic stress models. This programme looks at technostress, the always-on expectation and financial strain, and at structural responses such as the right to disconnect. It recognises that resilience is not life-stage agnostic, using menopause and neurodiversity to show how demands and resources shift across a career, with three principles for supporting difference. It then asks how to name the environment accurately, moving from VUCA to Jamais Cascio's BANI framework and its positive counter-postures, and closes with a capstone on the UK four-day week pilot, aircraft carrier flight operations and Costco.
Aims
This programme aims to help leaders respond to modern pressures with structural rather than purely individual answers, recognising digital and financial strain, supporting people fairly at different life stages, and reading a brittle, anxious and nonlinear environment accurately enough to build resilience into how work is organised.
In summary, you will be able to:
- Explain how digital connection, financial strain and life-stage changes such as menopause and neurodiversity shift demands and resources at work.
- Use the BANI framework and its positive counter-postures to read your operating environment and distinguish prediction problems from sense-making problems.
- Design structural responses to modern pressures, drawing on the right to disconnect, principles for supporting difference and lessons from the capstone cases.
What you'll develop
Through this Focus course, you will build the ability to:
- Explain why technostress is a distinct demand and identify the assumed expectations that keep people always on.
- Distinguish a structural response from a willpower response, using the Volkswagen and French right to disconnect examples.
- Explain how menopause and neurodiversity can change demands and resources, using the six areas of resilience as the map.
- Distinguish a tolerance framing from a resources framing and identify practical, low-cost adjustments to the demand or the resource.
- Distinguish VUCA from BANI and identify which BANI letter a current situation most resembles.
- Explain how established models account for the results of the UK four-day week pilot, carrier flight deck operations and Costco's response to the 2008 crisis.
