Who It's For
Leaders and managers looking after their own resilience and wellbeing
Overview
Wellbeing, resilience and adaptability are often treated as one idea, and that confusion leads to the wrong interventions. This programme separates the three, names the sources of work stress through the HSE Management Standards, and draws on the Job Demands-Resources model, the bandwidth tax and Maslach and Leiter's account of burnout. It explores what resilience is and is not, with Diane Coutu's three building blocks and post-traumatic growth, then offers practical models for meeting change, from Bridges' Neutral Zone to Seligman's three P's and the HOPE model. It closes with mindfulness as a trainable leadership practice.
Aims
The aim is to give leaders a sound foundation for their own resilience and wellbeing: the clarity to tell stress, burnout and resilience apart, the understanding that resilience depends on context as well as character, and practical habits they can draw on in the middle of a difficult day.
In summary, you will be able to:
- Distinguish wellbeing, resilience and adaptability, and explain how job demands, resources and work stressors contribute to burnout using the HSE Management Standards.
- Apply models such as Coutu's building blocks, Bridges' transitions, Seligman's three P's and the HOPE model to your own response to change.
- Use practical mindfulness techniques and the window of tolerance to regulate your responses and lead more steadily under everyday pressure.
What you'll develop
Through this Focus course, you will build the ability to:
- Distinguish wellbeing as a state, resilience as a capacity and adaptability as a skill, and explain why each needs a different intervention.
- Use the HSE Management Standards and the Job Demands-Resources model to identify what is driving strain in a team, including during organisational change.
- Explain why resilience depends on context and distinguish its individual, team and organisational levels.
- Describe Coutu's three building blocks of resilience and apply them to a recent setback, using the Stockdale Paradox to distinguish facing reality from blind optimism.
- Use the 4 R's, the change curve and Bridges' transition model to name and normalise reactions to change, including time spent in the Neutral Zone.
- Explain Kabat-Zinn's definition of mindfulness and distinguish it from relaxation, emptying the mind and escapism.
