About this course

Overview and Outcomes.

Overview

When the resilience needed is not only your own, the conditions a leader creates matter most. This module covers the two contexts every leader builds from day one, Amy Edmondson's definition of psychological safety, Ronald Heifetz's holding environment and how to turn the heat up and down, how unspoken anxiety leaks into behaviour, and Achor and Gielan's research on recovery, with Google's Project Aristotle as the case. Resilience gets you through what has already happened; adaptability changes what you do about what is coming. This module defines adaptability as a learnable skill, introduces the adaptability quotient popularised by Natalie Fratto and its four observable behaviours, and uses the Adobe Creative Cloud case. It then contrasts the lurch with Hamel and Valikangas's zero trauma and continuous renewal, and names common organisational pitfalls.

What you'll develop

In this Bitesize, you will develop the ability to:

  1. Explain Edmondson's definition of psychological safety and describe how a leader's response to the first piece of bad news builds or destroys it.
  2. Use Heifetz's holding environment to judge when to turn the heat up or down during adaptive change.
  3. Plan recovery for yourself and your team that scales with demand and distinguishes genuine recovery from simply stopping.
  4. Distinguish adaptability from resilience and explain why neither can substitute for the other.
  5. Identify the four observable behaviours of the adaptability quotient and plan one practical step for each in your own work.
