When you step up to a higher level, what you paid in the last 12 months for lower-level courses inside the bigger course comes off its price, in proportion to how much of each is inside it, whichever topic it's from. Courses at the same or a lower level don't give credit against each other. A Focus course or above always costs at least £15. Read the full terms

About this course

Overview and Outcomes.

Overview

The group at the top is often called a team without being one. This module covers Hambrick and Mason's upper echelons theory, Jon Katzenbach's top team myth and the single-leader unit, Lencioni's first team, and the particular features of top teams in public services, including statutory officers. It names four ways top teams go wrong and reads Northamptonshire County Council through the lens of the top team. The capstone practises the skill that matters most: reading a real situation through the ideas of team development. It examines the 1996 Everest disaster, Wales at Euro 2016 under the banner Together Stronger, and the emergency response to the Manchester Arena attack, drawing on Hackman, Edmondson, Roberto and JESIP. The cases are compared on two dimensions and drawn together into five layers of team development.

What you'll develop

In this Bitesize, you will develop the ability to:

  1. Distinguish a single-leader unit from real team mode and choose deliberately which an agenda item needs.
  2. Identify four ways top teams go wrong, including portfolio defence and performing unity.
  3. Assess your own top team using questions on purpose, mode, voice, the first team and learning.
  4. Apply team lenses such as voice, purpose and teaming to a real case, reading it forwards rather than with hindsight.
  5. Compare cases on psychological safety and voice, and on shared purpose and structure.
