Who It's For
Leaders and managers running idea generation with their teams
Overview
Many organisations run another ideas workshop when the real gap lies elsewhere. The creative spark starts by separating creativity, innovation and entrepreneurship, drawing on Levitt, Guilford, Amabile, Csikszentmihalyi and Torrance, and by challenging common myths. It then offers a practical toolkit for both halves of creative thinking: generating options with de Bono's Six Thinking Hats, Osborn's rules, SCAMPER and brainwriting, and converging on decisions with the New, Useful, Feasible test. Finally, it follows Robert Dilts in treating genius as a set of strategies, exploring Disney's Dreamer, Realist and Critic method, Aristotle's induction and Einstein's combinatory play.
Aims
This programme aims to help leaders treat creativity as a discipline their teams can practise rather than a gift a few people possess, building the judgement to diagnose where ideas stall and the confidence to run sessions that generate fresh options and end in decisions.
In summary, you will be able to:
- Distinguish creativity from innovation and diagnose whether a stalled idea in your organisation reflects a creativity gap or an implementation gap.
- Apply divergent and convergent techniques, from the Six Thinking Hats and SCAMPER to the New, Useful, Feasible test, to a real service problem.
- Design structured ideas sessions for your team that separate modes of thinking in time, drawing on Disney's method and Pixar's Braintrust.
What you'll develop
Through this Focus course, you will build the ability to:
- Distinguish creativity, innovation and entrepreneurship, and diagnose whether a stalled idea in your organisation reflects a creativity gap or an innovation gap.
- Explain the core theories of where creativity comes from, including divergent and convergent thinking, Amabile's three components, Csikszentmihalyi's systems model and flow, and Torrance's four measures.
- Distinguish divergent from convergent thinking, and creative from critical thinking, and explain why judgement should be held back until the right moment.
- Apply generation techniques including the Six Thinking Hats, Osborn's four rules, SCAMPER, brainwriting 6-3-5 and mind mapping to a real service problem.
- Explain Dilts's argument that genius is a describable, repeatable strategy rather than an innate gift.
- Apply Disney's Dreamer, Realist and Critic method, including its four rules, to run a structured ideas session with your team.
