Who It's For

Leaders building organisations where innovation lasts

Overview

Culture does not innovate; people do, and they take their cue from what leaders actually do. Making innovation stick focuses on the conditions that turn occasional ideas into lasting practice. It draws on The Innovator's DNA, Edmondson's psychological safety and constraint as a source of creativity, then shows how to audit innovation with the Cranfield Innovation Health Check, Rao and Weintraub's building blocks and a balanced portfolio. Schumpeter, Sarasvathy's effectuation, the Lean Startup and the Business Model Canvas bring an entrepreneurial mindset inside public organisations, and a capstone reads the Preston Model, IKEA and Finland's Housing First strategy through the whole toolkit.

Aims

This programme aims to equip leaders to build an organisation where innovation is a habit rather than a series of stories, combining a culture that makes it safe to experiment, honest measurement of progress, and an intrapreneurial approach to testing small ideas before committing resources.

In summary, you will be able to:

  1. Assess your organisation's innovation health and culture using the Cranfield Health Check, Rao and Weintraub's building blocks and the maturity spectrum.
  2. Plan a small, evidence based test of an idea using effectuation, Lean Startup experiments and the Business Model Canvas.
  3. Lead a team culture of innovation by modelling discovery skills, building psychological safety and applying lessons from Preston, IKEA and Finland.

What you'll develop

Through this Focus course, you will build the ability to:

  1. Describe the five discovery skills of associating, questioning, observing, experimenting and networking, and how a leader can model each one.
  2. Explain how trust, psychological safety, constraint and regular ideation rituals turn individual creativity into a shared team culture.
  3. Use the Cranfield Innovation Health Check's five dimensions as an honest self assessment to identify which dimension is holding your organisation back.
  4. Explain why Rao and Weintraub place culture above process, and place your organisation on the innovation maturity spectrum.
  5. Explain Schumpeter's creative destruction and five new combinations, and describe the four parts of an entrepreneurial mindset.
  6. Identify which programme frameworks, such as diffusion, the crazy quilt and jobs to be done, explain each of the Preston, IKEA and Finland cases.
