When you step up to a higher level, what you paid in the last 12 months for lower-level courses inside the bigger course comes off its price, in proportion to how much of each is inside it, whichever topic it's from. Courses at the same or a lower level don't give credit against each other. A Focus course or above always costs at least £15. Read the full terms

About this course

Overview and Outcomes.

Who It's For

Leaders and top teams working in complex, uncertain conditions

Overview

Complexity asks leaders to give up the instinct to look decisive and to keep a clear head instead. Across a full day, this programme moves from diagnosis to action: VUCA and BANI used with precision, the Cynefin framework with Avanti's mapping from Dr Huish's Cranfield research, wicked problems and the language of risk and uncertainty. It then develops sensemaking, probe, sense, respond and scenario planning, Heifetz's adaptive leadership, Johansen's VUCA Prime, reframing through Human Learning Systems and organisations as complex adaptive systems, closing with Apollo 13, the 2022 mini-budget and the UK Vaccine Taskforce.

Aims

The aim is to develop leaders who can diagnose complex situations accurately and act within them with confidence, choosing the right response for each kind of problem, experimenting safely, rehearsing several futures and leading systems with a steady presence when certainty is not available.

In summary, you will be able to:

  1. Diagnose the kind of challenge you face using VUCA, BANI, Cynefin and Grint, and distinguish risk, uncertainty and ambiguity.
  2. Apply sensemaking, safe-to-fail probes, scenario planning and reframing to make progress on a real complex problem in your organisation.
  3. Lead adaptively through complexity, using VUCA Prime, the holding environment and lessons from Apollo 13 and the UK Vaccine Taskforce.

What you'll develop

By the end of this Immerse, you will be able to:

  1. Distinguish volatility, uncertainty, complexity and ambiguity, and identify which of the four mainly responds to more information.
  2. Explain the defining properties of a wicked problem, including no definitive formulation, no stopping rule and the one-shot nature of each attempt.
  3. Explain how Weick's sensemaking reverses the conventional analyse, decide, act sequence, and identify when careful analysis still fits better.
  4. Distinguish technical problems from adaptive challenges by asking whose behaviour, attitude or priority has to change.
  5. Distinguish an inherited frame from a chosen frame and explain how framing shapes both the solutions considered and the people involved.
  6. Identify how a single crisis moves between Cynefin domains, using Apollo 13 and the 2022 gilt crisis as examples.
